Marvel commissioned this ad-free title, one of the earliest biographical comics from a mainstream publisher, shortly after the ordination of John Paul II. Father Mieczyslaw Malinski, a lifelong friend of the first non-Italian pope, and two Marvel staffers present the Popes life story, including his youth in Poland, his support of the Resistance during World War II, and the unsuccessful attempt on his life in 1981.
